Glenmark claimed its 30th North Canterbury rugby title when it came from behind to beat Oxford 18-7 in the Luisetti Seeds North Canterbury grand final on Saturday 6th August.
After Oxford exploded to a 7-0 lead in the opening moments the momentum appeared to swing their way. Glenmark did enough to keep Oxford scoreless for the remainder of the half.
Glenmark began the second half with a new focus and executed moves with more precision and confidence. The final score was 18-7 and the Alf Hunnibell Memorial Trophy was presented to Glenmark.
Alf Hunnibell, Richard and Max Luisetti’s grandfather, was a boot maker and operated from a shop in High Street, Rangiora (now Capones Restaurant). Alf was Secretary and Treasurer of the North Canterbury Rugby Union and managed the senior team for 25 years (1925 to 1950). The Alf Hunnibell Memorial Trophy has been presented in North Canterbury since 1960.
Max and Jimmy Luisetti (great great grandsons of Alf Hunnibell) were the ball boys for the encounter.
