Four out of a possible of seven awards were presented to growers of Luisetti Seeds/Plant & Food cultivars in the recent United Wheat Growers National Wheat Growing Competition.
The judges commented that the growing season last year was far from perfect in most regions. “It was pleasing however, to see the entries in the competition were of a high standard. In particular, the top samples were free from small grains with high test weights in the feed wheat section and very good protein levels in the Milling Wheat section.”
Morrish Farming (Chris & Dave Morrish of Broadfield) was awarded 1st prize for Conquest wheat in the milling wheat section. Chris Morrish was one of Luisetti Seeds first Conquest growers when the cultivar was pre-released in 2005.
Chris says “Conquest is a reliable performer on my farm. I like to grow New Zealand cultivars, Conquest and the new Luisetti Seeds/Plant & Food biscuit cultivar (CRWT157) that I am also growing this year were bred and trialled at Plant & Food, just along the road from my farm. “
“Wakanui feed wheat, which we also grew this year as a seed crop for Luisetti Seeds, was the highest yielding wheat we have ever grown”.
The grading results of Chris’s Conquest were as follows;
- Moisture: 13.6%
- Screenings: 0.3%
- Protein: 13.1%
- Kernel Weight: 46
- Falling Number: 391
- Test Weight: 78.5
Second in the milling wheat section were DC & LJ Redmond of Pendarves and third, with Saracen, was E & M Watson of Wakanui.
Excede wheat was third in the Feed section grown by AG & AC Hurst Farming Co Ltd, Rakaia.
Congratulations to all the prize winners in this competition.
