Bumpa Luisetti Feed Barley Range

Sowing

Bumpa is a medium maturing feed barley that can be sown from July to October in Canterbury and the North Island.

It is similar in style to most other spring barleys and shows consistently high yields. Medium to high feed barley sowing rates are recommended (seed size is high and it has good tillering ability).

Very High Yield Potential

It has high relative yields in good conditions and performs at its best under high inputs but is also well suited to lower inputs in early spring sown dryland conditions.

Spring sown trials to date show Bumpa achieves top yields in Canterbury and the lower North Island. More research is being done to identify yield performance under autumn sowing in Canterbury and spring and autumn sowing in Southland.

Grading Results

Bumpa easily produces acceptable grading figures with a good test weight, high seed size and low screenings.

Disease Tolerance

Bumpa will need protection from BYDV and scald. It has good tolerance to net blotch, leaf rust and ramularia. Bumpa is well suited to a 2 fungicide programme.

T1 – GS 30 (very early stem elongation) – 200 mls Proline + 200 mls Acanto

T2 – GS 49 (awns emerging) – 300 mls Proline + 300 mls Acanto This needs to be an increased rate to support good genetic net blotch and ramularia tolerance and ensure then important grain-fill period is protected to achieve maximum yields.

Straw Strength

It is medium tall with good straw strength and could benefit from PGR’s in all early spring sown crops and those with over 8t/ha yield potential.

Apply medium rate PGR at GS 30 (150-200 mls Moddus) or Terpal (1 L/ha) at GS 49.

Nitrogen

Standard feed barley strategy is recommended. Barleys develop quickly, especially later sown crops, so all growth stage based management needs to be timely for high yields.

Harvesting

Bumpa threshes easy.
