Excede-Luisetti

Sowing “Mid April to mid June”

Excede is an earlier maturing winter wheat. It flowers and matures approximately 7 days earlier than Claire/Option. Medium to high feed wheat sowing rates are recommended. Seed size is medium and Excede has medium tillering ability. Later sowings (late May/June) will perform best in medium to heavy soils or with irrigation.

High Yields “Consistently good and shines when the going gets tough”

Excede produces very high relative yields in adverse conditions (e.g. drought, leaf /ear diseases and BYDV) but still performs in the top group in higher input conditions.

Excede is well suited to where an early finish may be an advantage, e.g. dry land conditions or shorter season environments, achieving up to 12 t/ha in May sown light irrigated conditions.

North Island winter sown trial results show Excede is a top performer in this environment.

Grading Results “Consistently much better than feed average”

Excede produces good grading figures with a high test weight, medium to high seed weight, low screenings, medium to high falling number values and good proteins.

Disease Tolerance “One of the most bullet-proof feed cultivars available”

Excede has excellent tolerance to seedling and adult stripe rust, leaf rust and fusarium, and also good field tolerance to septoria leaf blotch and mildew, allowing low fungicide inputs to be used, but crops should always be monitored for susceptibility to new races of diseases. Suited to the ‘straddle fungicide’ approach. It also has above average BYDV tolerance, but insecticide protection is recommended.

Straw Strength “Short and very strong”

Excede is shorter than most feed wheats but growth regulators are advised on all late April/early May sown crops and/or where yield potential is 10 t/ha plus. Use 1.5 l/ha Cycocel + 200mls/ha Moddus at GS 30-31. 1.5 L Cycocel alone could be used in lower risk conditions.

Nitrogen “Normal feed management, but slightly earlier”

Standard feed wheat nitrogen strategy is recommended. EXCEDE is approximately 7 days earlier than most European feed wheats, so all application timing will be marginally earlier.

Harvesting “Easy to thrash with great sample”

Excede is easy to harvest and consistently produces a great sample. Falling numbers are better than most feed wheats, normally in the 250-350 range.
