Winter is the best time to address problem thistles in pastures.
Nodding and Variegated thistles should be sprayed out in winter, when the white clover in the sward is dormant, ideally after a frost.
Sprays, such as Corteva agriscience’s Pasture Kleen Xtra, will kill thistles and will not be taken up by clover while the legume is dormant.
Herbs such as plantain and chicory can be affected by the sprays, even in winter, although in some instances, farmers might be prepared to sacrifice the herb content in their pasture in order to control production-limiting thistles.
Farmers should seek advice from their Luisetti Seeds’ agronomist to get the best advice on their particular thistle-control requirements.
